Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), pronounced as the word "act", stems from traditional cognitive behavioral therapy. While CBT focuses on helping people challenge maladaptive thought and behavioral patterns, ACT views that we must learn to embrace our thoughts as they are without judgment and commit to taking action in accordance to our values if we wish to live a fulfilled life. ACT holds that pain and discomfort are a fact of life and something we must get comfortable with.

Sessions are generally held on a weekly basis. In clinical trials, 12 – 16 sessions of ACT has been shown to be effective for treating anxiety, depression, and chronic pain as well as enhancing quality of life. Some therapists may recommend more or less frequent sessions, based on each person's unique needs and goals.
