Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is a therapeutic approach developed by British psychologist, Paul Gilbert. CFT aims to help those who struggle with high shame and self-criticism. CFT helps individuals to foster different aspects of compassion (e.g. compassionate motivation, sympathy, sensitivity, and distress tolerance) and kindness towards the self and others.
CFT helps individuals that are highly sensitive to criticism or rejection - whether real or perceived - and that tend to internalize that disapproval.
CFT can be beneficial for those support seeking support with the following concerns:
The number of therapy sessions will depend on your particular concerns and their complexity. If CFT is being provided alongside CBT or counseling, you can expect to have between 6 to 15 sessions.
