On Grief

Thoughts on Grief

  • Grief can be traumatic and transformative.
  • People in grief are not "broken" and do not need to be fixed.
  • Grief is not an illness and there is no cure.
  • True expertise in grief lies within the griever.
  • If you love, you will grieve.
  • Grief is nonlinear.

Why I decided to get additional training in grief

The truth is we live in a grief illiterate society. Most people don't know what to say when it comes to loss and grief, especially when it comes to talking about death.  Often people avoid discussing it or even thinking about it, and when death happens people simply don't know what to do. Most people lack the knowledge on how to help others in grief, and people in grief end up feeling lost, alone, and confused.

Our culture thinks that grief is a problem that needs to be fixed. When in reality, grief is a normal part of human existence that needs to be seen, heard, and felt.  Our grief needs witnessing.

My personal experiences as a bereaved person and my professional experiences as a psychologist, in addition to the reasons above, have all led me to wanting to pursue further training to support others in grief.

What does it mean to be a Certified Grief Educator?

A Certified Grief Educator is committed to providing the highest level of grief support through education, experience, and insights into the often unacknowledged rocky terrain of grief.

Certified Grief Educators have completed a 12-week certificate program designed by world-renowned grief expert, David Kessler.  In addition to this intensive training, they have a full year of training and ongoing support to keep their education up-to-date.

Certified Grief Educators bring David's unique methodology, tools, and decades of experience to help people navigate the challenges of grief.

What to expect in therapy with me as a Certified Grief Educator

My role is to inform, reflect, and guide people in grief towards creating a life that honors theirs loved ones. The foundation of offering my support comes from a place of  empathy, genuineness, honesty, and respect.

While offering a holistic approach (mind-body-spirit) in a safe space, I remind people of the importance of connection and assist the bereaved as they journey towards improved health in the wake of loss. The purpose of grief counseling is to help people navigate their grief.

The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same again.
